The teaching faculty was augmented to include CMU faculty from the Heinz College, the School of Design, and the ETC, as well a visiting professor from Jefferson University to assist the graduate students with the software. The focus of the studio was on urban systems. Testing of the software was done in the Spring 2018 semester studio of the CMU Master of Urban Design (MUD) program. Over the course of the spring 2018 semester, eight of the ten were used by graduate urban design students for planning and design projects and later evaluated at the end of the semester. The ten comprised four software types: 1) geospatial 2) 3D modeling 3) representation and 4) virtual reality. Phase III also built upon the Phase II development work by the ETC where 3D and virtual reality software, primarily Unity, was used for a semester-long project.ДЇor Phase III field testing the research team narrowed the software list to ten that included commonly-used programs that would most likely be used by city planners. Phase III of the research involved testing software selected by the research team from the 2017 investigative work of Phase I when over thirty planning and design 2D and 3D software programs were identified by surveying city planning departments, universities, professional practitioners and software developers.
